Earlier this week, John Campbell jumps in the van after school and says, "Mom, I've got something to tell you. I've got a girlfriend." I'm very interested and start asking questions. He doesn't want to talk at first, then I ask him where "it" happened. That gets him going. "It happened in the computer lab, mom. She walked up to me and asked me if I would be her boyfriend and I told her yes." Hmmm, well does "she" have a name? "Emily - I'm going to take care of her and be nice to her and protect from mean, older kids."
I'm don't know whether to laugh or cry - my little boy is growing up. That night, he and his daddy discuss it during bath time. Daddy, being the anal, serious man he is, tells John Campbell that he doesn't have to be someone's boyfriend just because they ask him...blah blah blah. Okay, let's make it into a real heavy situation! And he also tells JC that he can politely tell her he can't/doesn't want to be her boyfriend.
The next day, John Campbell decides to take his advice. That night, when we are going to sleep and I'm rubbing his head/hair/back/arm in bed, he wants to talk. "Mom, I told Emily I couldn't be her boyfriend today. But she told me it was too late - I already said yes." He is resigned, it seems. LOL
He also has a friend at school who has two girlfriends - imagine that, he has two! And of course, John Campbell's daddy has told him you can only have one at a time...so I wonder if John Campbell has told this little boy he is breaking the laws of kindy-dating.
