Happy New Year's

The traditional Southern New Year's meal.  With some slight tweaking for our family...gotta make something the three amigos will actually eat.

Greens - we'll be doing boiled cabbage because they won't touch turnip or collard greens.  This represents financial prosperity - a.k.a. green money.

Black Eyed Peas - again, for prosperity, as in, coins.

Pork - Mama always made hog jowl or whatever that stuff is called but we'll do pork chops.  This represents progress, as pigs root forward while they eat and root out what they want.

Corn Bread - represents the bread of life.  I still use the cast iron skillet Mama gave to me, seasoned for me, and taught me how to use.

Now, I need something to symbolize good health.  ?????

And, in some cultures, fish symbolizes fertility.  I won't be touching any fish on Jan. 1.  No way, no how.

Okay, back to finding something for good health...I'm going to make rice, so who knows.  Okay, rice will be for health and I'll make them all eat apple slices...and instill superstition into the minds of my children so that they will force their wives to make ridiculous dinners on Jan. 1.
